Anatomy

Three of the four quad heads originate from the femur; the rectus femoris originates from the pelvis. All four converge at the patella tendon and insert on the tibia. The rectus femoris also crosses the hip joint, making it involved in hip flexion.

Training Tips

  • Squats are essential for complete quad development — no machine fully replicates them.
  • Leg extensions have their place as isolation work but should not replace compound movements.
  • Controlling the descent in squats and leg presses produces more quad stimulus.

FAQ

How often should I train quads?▾
Most people benefit from training quads 2 times per week. This provides enough frequency for muscle protein synthesis while allowing adequate recovery between sessions.
How many sets per week for quads?▾
10–20 working sets per week is a reasonable range for most trainees. Start at the lower end and increase gradually as your recovery allows.
What is the best exercise for quads?▾
The best exercise depends on your equipment and goals. For overall development, squat is typically one of the most effective choices.
