How To Perform
- 1 Set the bar on the squat rack at roughly collarbone height.
- 2 Position the bar on the upper traps (high-bar) or lower on the rear delts (low-bar).
- 3 Unrack the bar and step back, feet shoulder-width or slightly wider, toes slightly out.
- 4 Brace your core and descend by simultaneously pushing knees out and hinging slightly at the hip.
- 5 Descend until hip crease is at or below knee level.
- 6 Drive back up, maintaining a tight brace throughout.
Form Cues
- ✓ Keep your chest up throughout — the bar should not fall forward.
- ✓ Push your knees out in the same direction as your toes.
- ✓ Breathe and brace before each rep — use intra-abdominal pressure.
- ✓ Drive through the whole foot, not just the heel.
Common Mistakes
- ✗ Knees caving inward — push them out actively.
- ✗ Excessive forward lean — keep the chest up.
- ✗ Squatting too shallow — depth at or below parallel is the target.
- ✗ Heels rising — work on ankle mobility or use heel elevation.
Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Barbell Back Squat, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
