Box Squat

The box squat has you sit back to a box or bench at a fixed depth before standing up. The box gives you a consistent target depth and teaches you to sit back and keep tension in the legs, which is why it is popular for squat technique and for training around a stalled bottom position.

How To Perform

  1. 1 Set a box or bench behind you at a height that puts your thighs about parallel when seated, and position the bar on your back as for a squat.
  2. 2 Take a stance slightly wider than shoulder-width and brace your core.
  3. 3 Push your hips back and lower under control until you touch the box lightly.
  4. 4 Keep your torso tight, pause briefly without relaxing, then drive your feet through the floor to stand.

Form Cues

  • ✓ Sit back to the box, not straight down, and keep your shins close to vertical.
  • ✓ Touch the box lightly — do not drop onto it or fully unload your legs.
  • ✓ Push the floor away as you rise rather than rocking your torso forward.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Dropping onto the box and relaxing the hips and back at the bottom.
  • ✗ Rocking back and then throwing the torso forward to stand.
  • ✗ Choosing a box so low that the position becomes uncomfortable or compromises your back.
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Box Squat, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
