Goblet Squat

The goblet squat is the ideal squat for beginners. Holding a weight in front of the chest acts as a counterbalance, encouraging an upright torso and appropriate depth naturally.

How To Perform

  1. 1 Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell at chest height, vertically.
  2. 2 Feet shoulder-width or slightly wider, toes slightly out.
  3. 3 Squat down keeping the chest up, elbows travelling between the knees.
  4. 4 Drive back up to standing.

Form Cues

  • ✓ The weight at the front counterbalances you — use this to sit more upright and deeper.
  • ✓ Elbows track inside the knees at the bottom.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Holding the weight too low — keep it at chest height.
  • ✗ Partial depth — use the counterbalance to go deeper.
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Goblet Squat, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.
