Dumbbell Curl

The dumbbell curl allows supination during the curl — rotating the wrist as the arm raises — which provides additional bicep peak activation. It also allows unilateral training for symmetry.

How To Perform

  1. 1 Hold dumbbells at your sides with palms facing inward (neutral grip).
  2. 2 As you curl, rotate the wrist to a supinated position (palm up) at the midpoint.
  3. 3 Fully supinate at the top of the movement and squeeze the bicep.
  4. 4 Lower under control, pronating back to neutral at the bottom.

Form Cues

  • ✓ The supination during the curl is the key differentiation from other curl variations.
  • ✓ Alternate arms or curl both simultaneously.

Common Mistakes

  • ✗ Not supinating — performing neutral-grip dumbbell curls misses the supination advantage.
  • ✗ Swinging body to get the weight up.
💡 Professor Splits Says:

Progressive overload is the engine of muscle growth. Track your weights and aim to add small increments weekly. For Dumbbell Curl, this means gradually increasing load, volume (sets × reps), or decreasing rest periods over time.

FAQ

How many sets of Dumbbell Curl should I do?▾
3 sets of 10–15 reps is a solid starting point. Adjust based on your training frequency and overall weekly volume for biceps. Beginners should start with the lower end; advanced trainees can push toward the upper range.
What muscles does Dumbbell Curl target?▾
Dumbbell Curl primarily targets the Biceps. Secondary muscles include Forearms.
Is Dumbbell Curl good for beginners?▾
Dumbbell Curl is beginner-friendly. Focus on technique with lighter loads before adding weight.
How much rest between sets?▾
For Dumbbell Curl, 60–90 sec of rest between sets is recommended. Isolation exercises can typically use shorter rest periods (45–90 sec) to maintain the pump and time efficiency.
